Pig Farming

Pig farming (pig husbandry) is a rapidly growing, high-potential livestock enterprise in Kenya, driven by rising demand for pork and favorable feed conversion efficiency. Successful units require intensive, stage-specific management to optimize growth, prevent devastating disease outbreaks, and ensure profitability. Murphy Chemicals Kenya offers a targeted portfolio of veterinary products, feed additives, and hygiene solutions tailored for the unique needs of swine production.

Critical Foundation: Biosecurity, Housing & Hygiene
Pigs are highly susceptible to respiratory and enteric diseases. **Impenetrable biosecurity** is the first line of defense.

Murphy Chemicals Recommendation:
Disinfection:Murphy Farm Guard® (Iodophor) or Virkon® S (Potent oxidizing agent). Used for rigorous disinfection of housing (all-in/all-out system), equipment, and boots between batches.
External Parasite & Sanitation: Murphy Ectomin® (Cypermethrin) for spraying housing to control mites, lice, and flies. Murphy EcoLime® applied on floors to dry moisture, control ammonia, and suppress pathogens.

Stages of Pig Growth & Recommended Murphy Products

Stage 1: Pre-Weaning (Piglets: Birth to 3-5 Weeks)

Objective: Ensure piglet survival, colostrum intake, and healthy weaning weight.
Key Practices: Iron injection, teeth clipping, tail docking, warmth provision (creep area), and early creep feeding.
Major Health Challenges: Neonatal diarrhea (E. coli, Clostridium), iron deficiency anemia, sow mastitis (MMA), and crushing.

Murphy Chemicals Recommendations:

Iron Supplementation (Critical): Murphy Ferrodex® or similar Iron Dextran Injection. Administered (100-200mg) intramuscularly at 2-4 days of age to prevent anemia.

Piglet Scour (Diarrhea) Treatment & Prevention:

  • Murphy Coli-Trac® (Trimethoprim + Sulphadiazine). Broad-spectrum antibiotic for treating bacterial scours.
  • Murphy AmoxyColi® (Amoxicillin). Effective against a range of bacterial infections in neonates.
  • Oral Rehydration & Support: Murphy Stresroak® in water for scouring piglets to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
  • Sow Support (to benefit piglets): Treating sow for mastitis with Murphy Tylodox® Plus or PenStrept® (Penicillin + Streptomycin) if prescribed.

Stage 2: Weaning & Nursery Phase (Weaners: 3-10 Weeks, up to 25-30kg)

  • Objective: Manage post-weaning stress, maintain growth, and prevent the post-weaning growth check.
  • Key Practices: Provide highly digestible weaner diet, warm environment, consistent water supply, and group by size.
  • Major Health Challenges: Post-Weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS), Porcine Circovirus, Post-Weaning Diarrhea (E. coli), Swine Dysentery, and respiratory complexes.

Murphy Chemicals Recommendations:
Gut Health & Disease Prevention:

  • Murphy Oxysentin 20% (Oxytetracycline) or Tylodox® Plus. Often used in-feed or water under vet guidance to control respiratory and enteric diseases during this high-stress period.
  • Murphy Zinc Oxide (where permitted). High levels in initial weaner feed are highly effective in preventing post-weaning diarrhea.
  • Deworming: First deworming with Murphy Ivomec® Super (Ivermectin + Clorsulon) or Piperazine to control roundworms and ascariasis.
  • Stress & Appetite Support: Murphy Stresroak® in water for 3-5 days post-weaning. Murphy Livergen® (Liver tonic) to stimulate appetite and support metabolism.

Stage 3: Growing & Finishing Phase (Growers/Finishers: 25kg to Market ~70-90kg)
Objective: Achieve efficient daily weight gain (ADG) and optimal feed conversion ratio (FCR) for market.
Key Practices: Ad-libitum feeding with grower/finisher diets, adequate space, and good ventilation.
Major Health Challenges: Respiratory diseases (Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex – PRDC), enzootic pneumonia, swine erysipelas, internal parasites, and mange.

Murphy Chemicals Recommendations:

  • Respiratory Disease Treatment: Murphy Tylodox® Plus or Oxysentin 20% for outbreaks of bacterial pneumonia.
  • Erysipelas Treatment/Prevention: Murphy PenStrept® is highly effective against Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae.
  • Routine Deworming: Second deworming with Murphy Ivomec® Super. It controls internal parasites and external mange mites simultaneously.
  • Metabolism & Finish Support: Murphy Livergen® in water periodically to enhance liver function and nutrient utilization for better growth and carcass quality.
  • Mange Control: If mites persist, environmental spraying with Murphy Ectomin®.

Stage 4: Breeding Stock Management (Gilts, Sows & Boars)
Objective: Maintain fertility, successful conception, and healthy farrowings.
Key Practices: Proper body condition scoring, pregnancy diagnosis, gestation/lactation feeding, and farrowing house hygiene.
Major Health Challenges: Anoestrus, poor conception rates, mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA) syndrome, parasitic burdens, and lameness.

Murphy Chemicals Recommendations:
Pre- & Post-Farrowing Care:

  • Sow Deworming: Deworm with Ivomec® Super before entering the farrowing crate.
  • MMA Prevention/Treatment: Murphy PenStrept® or Oxysentin 20% administered around farrowing as per vet advice.
  • Appetite & Milk Flow Support: Murphy Livergen® and Stresroak® in lactation feed/water.
  • General Herd Health: Routine deworming every 4-6 months. Ectomin® for environmental parasite control.

Stage 5: Emergency & Disease Outbreak Management
For specific disease outbreaks (VETERINARY DIAGNOSIS IS MANDATORY):
African Swine Fever (ASF): NO EFFECTIVE TREATMENT OR VACCINE. Strict biosecurity, quarantine, and culling are the only controls.  Disinfection with Farm Guard® is crucial during outbreaks.
Porcine Reproductive & Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS): Supportive care with antibiotics (Tylodox® Plus) to prevent secondary infections.
Swine Dysentery: Murphy Coli-Trac® or Lincomix® (Lincomycin) can be effective treatments.

Critical Considerations for Kenyan Pig Farmers

1. Veterinary Partnership is Non-Negotiable: Establish a relationship with a swine veterinarian for vaccination programs (e.g., against erysipelas, parvovirus), accurate diagnosis, and prescription of antibiotics. Do not self-prescribe.
2. Observe Withdrawal Periods: Strictly adhere to withdrawal periods for all medications before slaughter to ensure pork is safe for consumption.
3. All-in-All-out (AIAO) Management: This is the single most effective practice to break disease cycles. Clean and disinfect (**Farm Guard®**) houses thoroughly between batches.
4. Nutrition is Paramount: Use well-formulated, quality feeds. Health products support but cannot compensate for poor nutrition.
5. Quality Breeding Stock: Source from reputable, disease-free farms to avoid introducing chronic diseases like PRRS or swine influenza.
6. Procurement: Buy genuine Murphy products  only from **licensed veterinary distributors or agrovets**.
7. Record Keeping: Maintain detailed records of breeding, farrowing, treatments, feed usage, and mortality to track performance and inform decisions.

By integrating stringent biosecurity, excellent nutrition, strategic veterinary interventions, and the targeted use of Murphy Chemicals Kenya’s health and hygiene products, pig farmers can build resilient, productive, and profitable enterprises, contributing significantly to Kenya’s agricultural economy and protein supply.
